About the IAW Program
Every year, thousands of international agricultural workers travel to Canada to support the country's vital agricultural industry. Approximately, 20,000 workers arrive in Ontario annually, with over 6000 working on farms and in greenhouses across the Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk Regions through government-supported programs. These workers, primarily from Mexico and Caribbean nations, play a crucial role in sustaining Ontario's agricultural economy.
To support their health and well-being, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care through Ontario Health West (HNHB LHIN), provides funding to Grand River Community Health Centre (GRCHC) to operate dedicated primary health care clinics for international agricultural workers.
These clinics are delivered on-site at farms, through mobile clinics in local town centres and virtually. GRCHC addresses a wide range of health concerns including musculoskeletal issues, hypertension, diabetes, skin conditions, sexual health and eye issues. Services also include social work support and health promotion initiatives to improve overall well-being.
Every year late spring, GRCHC - alongside many community partners - hosts a Health Fair for international agricultural workers. This event welcomes workers from Brantford, Brant, Haldimand-Norfolk and surrounding areas to enjoy food, prizes, raffles and connect with local health agencies and professionals.
